Hi! Welcome to the page for my top whatever video games!
This page is made to highlight my favorite video games!
These aren't in any particular order. They are however split between my top 10 and the rest.
The top 10 is more or less just a way to give extra highlight to gaves that are very important to me.
If there is a way to buy/download the game on the list I'll link to it via the title of the game.
I do try to keep it to one game per series but I do break that rule a couple of times. :p
I say this without hyperbole that I've thought about Inscryption about once a week since I played it around the time it released. To post an excerpt
from my steam review:
"It can not be overstated how much I enjoy everything about this game. It's been a while since a game has grabbed my attention so tight like this. When I'm not playing it, I'm thinking about it. It has firmly planted itself inside my mind and won't be a game I ever forget."
This game has scared me, excited me, made me think, and made me cry. In the year 2021, I don't think there is a game I enjoyed more than this.
Something that is no secret to anyone that knows me is that I love arcade puzzle games. Tetris, Puyo, Panel De Pon, Puzzle Bobble, and etc... so when I saw that one of my favorite game series, Tetris was getting a new game made by the people who brought us games like REZ I was very excited. When I finally got around to playing it, I can say that it is without a doubt one of the best games ever made. Not just one of the best Tetris games ever made. The music, the visuals, the sound design, the game feel. It's all so perfect. It's the only game that has made me desire getting any kind of VR set up because the beauty of it all in VR is breathtaking. It makes me so emotional every time I go back through it. It is my favorite single player version of Tetris hands down.
First time I'm breaking my own rules but for good reasons. Sonic 3 and Knuckles and Sonic Adventure are both my favorite Sonic games. If you aren't someone who has a Sonic shaped brain like I do then you probably need some explanation. The Sonic the Hedgehog series over the course of it's extensive life has gone though a bunch of different gameplay styles. Fans have split these styles into their own little groups. It's not uncommon to have a favorite amongst these groups.
Sonic 3 & Knuckles is my prime pick for "classic" style gameplay. It offers an impressive 12 full 2 act zones to play through. Each zone is so distinct and memorable that it's hard to pick a favorite. If you noticed there is no link for these that's because there are multiple modern ways to experience these games. Of course emulation is one and I'm not gonna dance around that fact but there are means that you should consider over emulation. The main one is Sonic 3: Angel Island Revisited or "Sonic 3: A.I.R." for short. It's a fan-made widescreen remaster that also adds a bunch of extra features. Obviously A.I.R. is free as it's a fan-made project but if you're looking to drop some money for an official product then Sonic Origins is what you're looking for. It's a collection of Sonic 1, 2, 3 & K, and CD all in widescreen with extra challenges and animated cutscenes connecting the games together.
Sonic Adventure is my favorite 3D Sonic game without question. The multiple playstyles all offer a unique and fun way to interact with the game world. Yes, even Big the Cat. One of my absolute favorite parts of Sonic Adventure is the weird, almost Tarantino-esque story telling. Each character's story feels like it's being retold by that character. There will be cutscenes that play in multiple stories but the characters have different line reads and the tone might change. Eggman feels more sinister when playing as the younger Tails for example. The hub worlds are an absolute vibe and I wish I could live in them. I don't think there is a more cozy game for me than Sonic Adventure. The only real way to play Sonic Adventure these days is through the modern ports, like the one on steam. (RIGHT HERE) but I beg you to please put some extra effort into modding the game to get it looking better. Sonic Adventure has gotten worse and worse with every port and sadly the steam version is about 3 layers deep and it shows. I'm going to leave a quick and easy tutorial (RIGHT HERE) to help get you started.
Cave Story is probably the most famous early indie game of all time. The entire game was created by one man in his free time while holding down a 9-to-5 over the course of years. An absoluting inspiring story that leads to one of the best games ever created. As someone who isn't really into Metroid-like games, I enjoy every time I play Cave Story. No matter the medium, it's always a fun time. The best part is that the original game is freeware. While it has gotten ported to every platform these days, you don't need to pay a cent to play it. The original fan-translated version is still up to download alongside a whole festival of fan ports. Including a version you can play in browser. The world and character/creature designs are some of my favorites. Mimigas 4 ever.
Hotline Miami is one of the most satisfying video games I've ever played. A perfect combination of twitchy action and puzzling out a plan ahead of time. While I do enjoy the story and multiple characters of the second game, I feel like I have to pick the first game over it. It's a much more focused game which lends itself to a smoother experience. When you get a handle on how everything works it just clicks and you can blow through a level. Contrary to how people act when they play this game on youtube, dying doesn't feel upsetting because of how quickly you can get back into the action. For me, it shares a lot of what I love about rhythm games in a way. Constantly doing a level over and over and over until I get that perfect run. All of this and I haven't even touched on that music or aesthetics of the game. While we're missing Roller Mobster from the second game, this game's soundtrack absolutely bangs. The neon palm tree aesthetic of Hotline Miami still dwells within my mind.
"At the end of everything, hold onto anything"
Night in the Woods is a very important game to me. The vibes, dialog, art, and characters are perfect to me. It's really hard to talk about this game without just going over the story so this section is a little shorter than most but don't let that fool you. This game is incredible. One of the rare games I pirated, finished, and then proceeded to buy on multiple platforms when I had the money to. I also highly suggest playing the small companion games "Longest Night" and "Lost Constellation" as well. They aren't required to enjoy the main game but they're cute short games that have the same charm.
P.S. GREGG RULZ OK
Do I even need to say anything here? I mean, it's UNDERTALE There is no way in hell I'M the first person you've seen talk about this game. If I am then you should buy and play this game RIGHT NOW! Hopefully you'll have a pure playthrough devoid of influence because that really is the best way to tackle a game like this. My quick pitch is that it's a game with great writing, a fun gameplay loop, and probably the most charm you've ever seen squeezed into a game. Once you're done with Undertale make sure to give Deltarune a shot as well. It's not finished yet but it's already shaping up to be one of my favorites.
Speaking of games that don't need to be explained. Final Fantasy 7 was, like many others, my first real RPG. Midgar is most likely the sole reason I have a hard time getting into RPGs that take place in high fantasy settings. I absolutely adore the world of FF7. This modern/fantasy setting where you have motorcycles and guns but also magic and monsters. I love it. It is still to this day my favorite setting. While I haven't personally played the remakes, I have watched playthroughs. (I'm poor and PS5s aren't real.) and while I have some nitpicks with Remake and Rebirth, they are both absolutely fantastic. I remember not being totally on board when they said remake was going to be Action RPG but they've won me over. The game flows so smoothly and the expansion of the world makes me so happy.
If you haven't noticed by now, the link provided does not link to where you can buy the game. Sadly there is no simple webpage that links to all the platforms. Thanks Square. Original FF7 is on most modern devices surprisingly enough. Even on mobile... but that's the issue. Like most of Square's ports, they are based on mobile versions of the game which causes some weird visuals and bugs not found in the original. Apparently there is some nasty bug in the modern ports of FF7 which can be fixed on PC but something you gotta steer clear of on console. If you are going to get any of these modern ports then obviously go with the Steam Version given it allows for fixing the issues of the port and modding. Modding allows some very nice QoL features. Even if you're not huge into the RPG gameplay (which, I think the materia system is still one of the best) the mods can allow you to play it in a very casual way which would allow you to experience the story. FF7's story is the perfect blend of goofy, serious, and emotional. It hits my brain in all the right ways. Which i'm happy to report that the remakes also nail. I was very scared the goofier moments wouldn't make it but those games are still very goofy.
I'm giving the remakes praise but please, please, please, I do suggest playing through the original before the remakes. A very light spoiler but the remakes 100% expect you to already know the story of FF7 going in. So even if you don't play it, watch a playthrough or something. I know that sounds weird but the remakes are also pretty weird. Anyway, I think that's enough ramble on FF7.
Vincent Valentine is the sickest character to ever be created, thanks.
LSD: Dream Emulator, a game I already talked about on this site and why it's important to me. I'll take any chance to talk about this game. I was first introduced to this game like many other people, via youtube gameplay videos. I don't really know what he's up to know or if he's a cool dude, but the one that ignited my passion for this game was youtuber "AzuriteReactions". After watching just a couple of his videos I fell in love with the game. Sadly there is no modern version of this game you can buy. Your best bet is emulating it. There is apparently a fan remake by the name of LSD: Revamped. I've never tried it so I can't speak to it's quality.
LSD at it's core is a "walking simulator" and that is not a knock on the game whatsoever. I know that term is pretty charged and holds some negative conotations but I love "walking sims". They are such a strong vehicle for crafting a world meant to be explored, which is exactly why I love Dream Emulator. The sole purpose of the game is to explore these dream-like settings "linking" them together by touching or interacting with anything. It's such a chill and surreal experience. It's addicting for me. The different areas, all taking different forms based on if you're having an "upper" or a "downer" dream. I genuinely can't get enough of just this whole game. I don't know what it is but it's imprinted itself onto my such a long time ago and it has never for a moment left my mind palace. It was like a key that unlocked a part of my brain that could understand and appreciate games in this genre. It has seriously changed something in me. Take all this gushing with a grain of salt though. To put things in perspective I was like... 15(?) or so when I was introduced to this game. So it was the perfect time to become a formative piece of media for me.
All of this to say, I really like LSD: Dream Emulator. A game that has little gameplay and no real "story" and I wouldn't have it any other way.
It would feel wrong to praise LSD this much without mentioning one of the main creative forces behind it, Osamu Sato. He has worked on other video games well and they all have such a standout vibe to them. Check out his site if you have the time. (which I have used as this game's link given you can't buy the game)
Spooky's House of Jump.... wait, no.... [flips through papers] Spooky's Jump Scare Mansion, that's right. Spooky's Jump Scare Mansion is a game where nothing bad happens and you just hang out with a ghost called Spooky. Spooky has a big mansion! It has at least a thousand rooms. What could she possibly do with that many rooms? I think you should find out. It's fine, nothing bad would ever happe-BOO! ah, got you! Haha... you should see the look on your face. You were all like "aah!" haha. No but seriously though, I think there is something up here. You feel it right? Yeah, things don't feel right.... what's that sound? It sounds like it's coming from right behind.... us.... OH! OH FUCK! RUN! OH MY GOD, RUN!
Spooky's Jump Scare Mansion by Akuma Kira (HD Renovation by Albino Moose Games) is a horror game. You make your way through one thousand rooms of Spooky's mansion. You delve deeper and deeper into the never-ending labyrinth. It's like the walls are constantly shifting around you. The only tools you have at your disposal are your legs. All you can do is run. It's all you can do now as you face horrors supernatural and beyond your comprehension. It may seem a daunting task but you have to see it through. What lies at the end of Spooky's Jump Scare Mansion?
Make sure to stop by the Hospital after you're done hanging out with your friends. Don't worry, you can come back and play with the Doll House later. there is an endless amount of fun to be had at Spooky's! Especially after that Renovation!
Hello again! That was my top 10 games in no particular order!
Now get ready for all the other games I like enough to list here... in no particular order :3
Hey... thanks for taking a look at this. Genuinely, it means a lot to me that people care even a little about the things I'm interested in.
This list isn't final. I'm sure I forgot some things, or I have yet to play a game I think is stellar enough to put on here.
I will be adding on to it whenever I feel like.
There are also games I play to death that aren't here because idk, feels weird to highlight them when they have very obvious issues.
Here's the honorable mention to the Pokemon Series and Payday series lmao.
Anyways, that's the end for now. Thanks again. :)
